Hotel Liva

Hotel "Līva" is the biggest hotel in Kurzeme region, as well as the biggest conference hotel in Liepaja. You can see a beautiful view of the city centre and Rožu square (Rose square) out of the hotels rooms.

A restaurant "River", situated in "Līva" ground floor, is the largest restaurant in the center of Liepaja, it offers great kitchen and a lovely view of the active city center. "Līva" also offers several conference rooms.

Liepaja – city where wind gets born!

The lighthouses of Liepaja are the first ones to welcome European sailors in Latvia. Liepaja is the third largest city in Latvia, situated in the southwest part of the Republic of Latvia, in the central part of the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. People have lived here for more than 750 years. The River Liva and village Liva were first mentioned in writing in 1253.

If we take into account industry of Liepaja, than Liepaja is the second biggest city after Riga.

Population of Liepaja city and region is about 140 000. The total area of the city is 6037 ha, of which 35 % is green and nature areas, including parks and water basins a.o.

What to see in Liepaja?

Architecture

Architecture is one of the main cultural value of Liepaja – many different style and age buildings are situated in comparatively small area. The historical buildings suffered much during the Second World War. However, you can still see many unique wood houses even from 17th century, and also some buildings by the most famost architect of Liepaja, Makss Pauls Berči.

Park and beach

– the Park is the longest planted park along the seashore in Latvia with a lot of entertainment possibilities, and the Liepaja Blue Flag beach has the whitest and finest sand in the Baltics. One of the most popular Liepaja Region attractions is the beach that is so manifold and wild! The Amber Trail with its picturesque steep banks, the kilometres long desolated beaches, fragrant pine forests, pebbled shore in Nida and unforgettable sunsets…

Karosta (the Naval Port)

– the unique military heritage of Tsarist Russia and Soviet Union time.

The Prison of Karosta (The Prison of Naval Port)

– the gloomy red brick wall, which is hidden behind the high fence, has functioned as Karosta Sailors Prison for nearly 100 years. Today you are invited to sea a terrifying historical show “Behind the Bars” with the audience participation. It is one of the most unusual “performances” in Latvia. Nobody will be bored in the prison performance.

Northern Forts of Karosta

Karosta Northern Forts is a wide system of fortifications that was built during 1894 – 1908 according to the Russian Tsar Alexander’s order. In Soviet times the forts and surroundings were in the prohibited area, but nowadays you can visit this former military object, walk along the underground paths that sometimes are on several floors, and find more and more new turnings. They say that there is one common path in the forts, but it has not been found yet. However, you still have got a chance to find it!

The Movalbe bridge

The metal bridge was built in 1906 over the Naval Port channel. It was blown up in the World War I. Later the bridge was reconstructed, and it functions immaculately since then. When you cross the bridge on your left you will see the Divers’ Training Centre, which is the only one in the Baltics. Unusual exhibitions are organised there regularly.

The Water Tower

The Water Tower was built in 1905 and it is 37 metres high. Water from the deep wells was transported to the tower-reservoir by steam-pumps. From there the water was supplied to the attics of the buildings three times a day. Nowadays electric pumps replace the water-pumps.

The Northern Pier

The building of this hydro-technical construction is closely connected with Liep?ja Sea Fortress and Naval Port building and it is a very important part of the set. The total length of the pier is 1,800 metres and width 7,35 metres.

St. Nicola’s orthodox maritime cathedral

Maritime Cathedral is symbol of Karosta. It was build in 1900.-1903. Tsar Nicola II put the first stone into western corner of cathedral. The Eastern style cathedral was build in the monolith concrete casting technique – without the supporting columns. This cathedral is the highest cupola type building on the shore of the Baltic sea. During the Soviet Union time in the building was established the club of man in blue and only in 1991. orthodox people get their church back.

St. Trinity Church

– the first-string church in the city. Organ of the St. Trinity Church is the biggest historically not changed mechanic organ in the world.

St. Meinard’s Catholic Church

– is the wonder of modern architecture, which was built as the pavilion of the Vatican at “Expo 2000” international exhibition in Hanover.

St. Anna Church and Petermarker

– the largest wooden alter in Latvia and the main historical centre of Liepaja

Where to have a good time?

Liepāja offers wide opportunities for entertainment and fun.

Along the beach the green park sprawled out for more than 3 km long. In that very place a stage “Pūt, vējiņi!” is situated, where many different rock music festivals like "Tavā un manējā Liepājā" (In Your and Mine Liepāja!), "Caines Beach Party", "Liepājas Dzintars" (the Amber of Liepāja) and other events often take place.

A short time ago a new entertainment possibility has appeared – karosta (the Naval Port). There you can visit the paintball club of Liepaja and rent all inventory for diving in the lake or sea; you can parachute, do gliding or try a pathless rally with jeep or boat rally. In Pāvilostā (Pavilport) you can enjoy a sea aroma during a little trip with a boat to Gotland. (there are 20 places on the boat).

Sport

In the park near beach You can play tennis or minigolf, as well as visit a skate- park. Liepaja also provides skating in the hockey hall, which is situated 15-30min a walk from the centre of Liepaja. You can visit a bowling hall (just about 150m from the beach) and carting trass (Vānes street 16).

When it gets colder you can go to the cinema, theatre or music club. Cinema Balle is main cinema in Liepaja. Movies in original language with subtitles in Latvian. Two comfortable halls, Dolby Digital sound system, cafe, excellent movies - a great way to spend your spare time (www.kinoballe.lv)

Clubs

Musical club Pablo and 1st Latvian Rock Cafe. (www.pablo.lv) 1st Latvian Rock Café is located in Liepāja on the corner of Zivju and Stendera streets. This club has become the largest music and entertainment centre not only in Liepāja, but the whole Kurzeme region. Every night music is played by the most popular DJ's, but on weekends there are live performances by both local and foreign bands and musicians. Pablo Music Club is the organiser of many music festivals in Liepaja - “Mēs, liepājnieki”, “Caines Beach Party”, etc. Dance, enjoy music and try Līvu beer!

Club "Fontaine Palace"(www.fontaine.lv) Rock-club - place to have a rest and good time – is situated in the old speaker at the channel, in the center of the city.Local and foreign groups perform on the stage on Friday and Saturday, on Sundays – jazz music. Next to the club there is summer café and grill-bar with a view to the channel. Entrance for free except concerts and special events.
